History of Mehrangarh Fort

Rao Jodha started building Mehrangarh Fort in 1459 after making Bhaurcheeria Hill his capital. The fort started its life as the foundation of Jodhpur State before its peak under the rule of Rao Maldeo from 1532 to 1569. The Rathores prevented Mughal control through two invasions that occurred in 1561 when Akbar attacked and again in 1679 when Aurangzeb pillaged Marwar while making people convert their religions.

The alliance between Jodhpur and Udaipur and Jaipur formed to oppose Muslim rule through a marriage agreement that included disputed inheritance conditions. The disagreement among Rajputs resulted in weakened unity which allowed the Marathas to advance their power base.

The British seized control of Jodhpur when it proved to be the biggest state in the Rajputana Agency during 1818. After independence the former state united with Rajasthan in 1949. Mehrangarh maintains its position today as a legacy that represents Rajput historical strength through architectural beauty.
