History of Jaisamand Lake

King of Mewar ‘Maharana Jai Singh’ built Jaisamand Lake in 1685 which is also called Dhebar Lake. The lake was built to slow down the Gomati River and to give the area a stable source of water. Finished in 1691, it was famed for being the world’s biggest artificial lake, at 87 square kilometers.

Building Jaisamand required the skills of thousands and demonstrated how well the Mewar dynasty controlled their water management. Along the lake’s edge, the marble walls hold six cenotaphs and a temple worshipping Shiva. 

Seven islands are part of the lake, some used to serve as summer residences for the royals. They reflect the rich living conditions and outstanding architecture of the Mewar royal family. The creation of this lake proudly symbolizes the culture and brilliance of Rajasthan’s royal family.

How to Reach Jaisamand Lake

Get to Jaisamand Lake by the most convenient ways of Flight, Train and Bus:

1. By Flight: Fly into Udaipur at Maharana Pratap Airport, about a 44-kilometer distance from Jaisamand Lake. It takes about an hour to travel by cab or taxi from the airport with a scenic ride.

2. By Train: You will find a Train to Udaipur City Railway Station, which is about 51 kilometers away from the lake. There are frequent trains from Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai to Udaipur. Head to the taxi or local transit area at the station to ease your way to the lake.

3. By Bus: Travel by bus, scheduled by government or a private buses for comfy trip, arriving at Udaipur Bus Stand which is well linked to nearby places. Then, you can get to this Lake by cab or local bus of 50 km.
